Phoot Camp 2014 Roster

It’s damn near impossible to decide who comes to Phoot Camp. We look through hundreds of self-portraits and essays, but also dig deeper into applicants’ websites and portfolios. We think about factors like talent, experience, personality, initiative, body of work, and diversity. We look to see if the applicant has done thoughtful personal series work, started organizations or ambitious projects, set out across the country/world, and evolved their personal aesthetic. We try to get a sense for people who will play well with others, leave their ego and the chip on their shoulder at home, give selflessly to make each event better, and bring fresh faces and perspectives to camp. We evaluate how much effort a person put into their self-portrait and essay. In a word, we obsess.

And it pays off. Meet the 2014 campers.

William Wilkinson I want to come back to Phoot with purpose. I want to bring my own ideas to share with everyone. I am now willing to bother everyone with my dumb ideas. Payback for jumping in that filthy lake repetitively, for the beer poured on my face. If you make the same mistake and re-invite this idiot, at least this time he'll know what the fuck he's doing. www.williamwilkinson.com

Lauren Randolph I not only play well with others, but I thrive when surrounded by other creative minds. I don’t just document what’s around me; I get inspired by it, and then use that to fuel the creative process in my portraiture. I always over pack when it comes to props, gear, and wardrobe – but am thrilled when I’m able to share what I’ve brought to make other people’s voice come to life in their photos as well. Forgot to bring something to camp? Don’t worry, I probably have one in every color. www.photolauren.com

Adrienne Pitts Phoot taught me some pretty valuable life lessons about collaboration and creativity, and how to be part of something bigger than my own self, who was always used to creating in isolation. It’s a pretty big gift, and one that I will always be grateful for. www.adrienne.co.nz

Nate Bolt For me photography has always been more of a messy combination of technology and doing something creative - anything creative. For the past 2-3 years I’ve been essentially tucked away inside the giant machine of Facebook, but now that I’ve left and am coming up for air again, I look to Phoot as a way to reconnect with the people and spirit of creating images that I’ve loved so much. www.boltron.com

Mark Lobo I hope to help make this Phoot Camp the best event yet, by giving without expectation, in the same way that others in the community have done for me. Like that time Nuzz fixed my jammed Hasselblad while traveling in an RV through New Mexico. Or when Ryan stood under an icy cold waterfall, shivering while I took long exposures, all the while saying “I can do another one, I can do another one,” over and over to help me make a great shot. www.marklobo.com.au

Nina Westervelt In the months following our time at Ashokan, I started a collage above my desk with promos and imagery from fellow campers. When creative times come to a standstill, I look at my board and think: How would a Phoot Camper burst through the boredom?  How can I push my curiosity, find a fresh point of view, hunt for the best light? How can I dream even bigger? www.ninawestervelt.net

Kyla Tretheway I’ve always been hopelessly nostalgic and constantly on the run. Since I spent my 16th birthday in line at the DMV, since the first time I realized you could wake up at home and fall asleep in San Francisco, or Utah, or one of the many places I’d read about. That was my passion. It wasn’t until I started to document these memories, in real time, with film. That’s when I realized the importance of photography in my life. www.ourwildabandon.com

David Worthington I take pictures the way that I want to live: with color; seeking patterns; celebrating people. At the forefront of my work is the presence of (often) the single subject. At the heart of my work is a desire to create and explore liminality, that space where the real and the numinous blur. I want there to be an element of fantasy within the realness of my images, whether it comes from a deliberately surreal staged portrait or an exhilarating yet tiny detail in a snapshot.  www.davidcreated.com

Beto Ruiz Alonso Do you enjoy having your mind blown? How about laughing hard and being constantly amazed? Would you like to meet your new best friends? Incredibly talented friends who share their knowledge freely? All of these things happen at Phoot Camp. If you're into photography, your love for it will increase tenfold. Perhaps your love for life will, as well. www.betoruizalonso.com

Justin Bettman Whether I’m setting up a guerrilla shoot with 8 strobes on a busy Brooklyn street, leaning off a bridge over a waterfall in Croatia to get the perfect dappled light from the river’s mist, or stripping down to my underwear in the snowy Icelandic tundra for a quirky self portrait, I like to strike a balance between high-quality photography and spontaneity, adventure, and fun. www.justinbettman.com/portfolio-two.php

Huy Doan My main focus in photography is people and what better way to create new work with so many creatives under one roof. Christopher Butler When our intrepid reporters confronted Butler about the photograph he gleefully exclaimed, "Phoot Camp helped me find myself. And now we're dating!"  Can it be? Did a simple man, unsure of his abilities, find confidence and support in the wilderness among…PHOTOGRAPHERS? And more importantly, once his confidence was restored, did this new “self-love” go TOO FAR? Did he, IN FACT, begin DATING his sexually reassigned CLONE?! www.butlerswebsite.com

Liz Devine I'M BRINGING MOTHA-FU$%ING TIGERS! I was accepted to Phoot Camp 3 years ago, and I know we all say it's changed our lives, but during my first 6 months in NYC I've been constantly reminded how true that is. PHOOT CHANGED MY LIFE! I would not be in NYC right now if it wasn't for Phoot Camp. I wouldn't be pushing myself for bigger and better photo opportunities if it wasn't for Phoot Camp. I would be missing some of my best friends if it wasn't for Phoot Camp.  www.lizdevine.com

Matthew Brush My goal at phootcamp this year is to share with others my passion for photography, creatively inspire people, make art and make new friends. I'll bring laser pens, a lion head, AA leotards, stilts, and a couple cases of beer. Please consider me and be assured that I'll make a great fit into the mix of people you choose. PS. If Busta and I are both selected, Phoot will be blessed with an amazing sound system for partying. www.matthewbrush.com

Stephanie Bassos I would love to bring my desire to collaborate, learn, laugh, and make connections to Phoot Camp. I'm a daughter of a psychologist and am fascinated with human connection, genuine portraits and candid documentation. I would bring my authenticity, my passion, my heart, my cameras, and my kindness. I have been to workshops and find that I learn best when I skip the class I'm supposed to be in, and grab another person to talk photos with or to shoot with. www.stephaniebassos.com

Gabriela Herman Phoot Camp for me is a much needed break from routine and, crucially, a time to experiment, play and learn. It's a safe place to push yourself into other roles, getting away from the camera, attempting shoots outside your comfort zone, or assuming leadership roles.  Also, I'm always down for group showers, zumba, cooking massive meals or singing happy birthday in multiple languages. www.gabrielaherman.com

Lisa Weatherbee I play pretend for a living. How crazy is that? I do it so much that these days I have trouble distinguishing reality from fantasy. I am completely fine with it. Phoot Camp is a very special place. It is a place where you can be as weird as you want to be.  This year at Phoot Camp, I promise to bring my imagination. Let's go down the rabbit hole guys. Let's find that portal. Let's time travel, OK?  www.lweatherbeephotography.com

Jillian Mann About a year ago, I decided to combine the two [travel and photography] into a last-ditch attempt at happiness before I resigned myself to “real life”. I sold everything I owned, bought an old trailer, and set out with my best friend to take the photos I dreamed of taking. Today, running our website and Instagram account are our full time jobs and we couldn’t be happier.  The last year of living on the road has taught me a lot of things. I know how to turn a stranger into a friend. I learn as much as I can on the fly. I take the bad as it comes. I live in the moment, while trying my best to capture it all on camera. I believe Phoot Camp would fit seamlessly into my new normal.  www.jillianmann.tumblr.com

Matthew Mahon I have been a dishwasher, golf caddie, arcade change boy, gift wrapper, pizza delivery man, house painter, landscaper, hotel desk clerk, antique rug salesman, bartender, and I worked at the fucking GAP. Marije Kuiper I am not as perfect as I would like to be. At night I wear a mouth guard because otherwise I grind my teeth. You could say that my Phoot Camp contribution is that I don’t keep anyone awake. But that’s not true. I snore. Pretty loud, for a girl. And in the morning, I never confess it was me.  I'm a 31 year old photographer from Amsterdam who fell in love with California and its creative community, that I got to know via my project Like Knows Like. I like to share, collaborate and laugh, that’s why I hope to be accepted for Phoot Camp 2014. If so, I'll bring earplugs. For everyone. Promised.  www.marijekuiper.nl

Chad Nicholson I immerse myself in everything I do. I'm currently producing a feature film with a cast and crew of 75+. I anticipate, I act, and I react. Though I've been moving from still photos to moving photos, my goal is constantly to create meaningful images that tell a story, through my own camera or someone else's. I will be the glue, rubber band, and gaffer's tape in the weeks leading up to, and during, Phoot Camp - making it the best it can be. www.chadnicholson.net

Cody Bratt I’ve spent countless days roaming around Joshua Tree and its surrounding area. Over the last year, a near total of one month has seen me crisscrossing the intersection of the Colorado and Mojave deserts. That place is my center and my creative spirit. Every time I pull onto one of the dirt roads stretching into the endless distance and plant my feet on the ground – the dust I’ve stirred swirling past me – I’m convinced again that magic *does* surround us constantly if we’d just look. www.codybratt.com

Brad Torchia I can guarantee you a few things: I will average roughly 1 hour of sleep per night, there will be a permanent smile pasted to the front of my face, I will impress you with mediocre guitar skills, and the number of s'mores I consume will make you question if I should instead be attending fat camp. Rafael Soldi My philosophy is: create a world that allows you to be your best self, and that is what I thrive to do for myself and others. One of my instructors once told me I might never be an artist because I like other people too much. That's when I realized I didn't want to just be an artist... I also wanted to be a curator, AND an editor, AND a champion of my peers, AND a teacher, AND an organizer, AND a matchmaker. www.rafaelsoldi.com

Josh Wool Aside from being super swell guy, I've been delving into the 19th century photo process called wet plate collodion along side my digital and polaroid work. What's so interesting and appealing to me with the collodion process is that the practitioner is in control of the entire process. From cutting the plates, to mixing the emulsion, making the developer, pouring emulsion for every shot, making the exposure, and then to developing and varnishing. It takes a lot of effort to make a single photograph and has instilled in me the idea of making a photograph rather than just taking one. www.joshwool.com

Anjali Pinto I never laugh harder or stay up later than when I'm with this group, and I wouldn't want to miss it for the world.  I'll try to make this year's Phoot Camp the best yet by helping the new members of the family feel welcome. I will hug the fear out of everyone.  www.anjalipinto.com

Alan Winslow I’ve spent the last five years of my life sleeping in stranger’s yards, on roadsides, and restaurant floors for my projects, and I’m decidedly low-maintenance. I’m also the first one to try any crazy food to test that it’s safe. I’m just throwing that out there, in case we need to cross that bridge. Life philosophy? Everyone has a story to share.  alanwinslow.com

Daniel Seung Lee As a three year Phoot Camp veteran, I've grown to understand the spirit of Phoot and I'd love to have the chance to keep that spirit alive for years to come. I also think as the original "baby" of the group, I feel I have a unique perspective to help guide the new younger generations at Camp – and, of course, haze them which will be fun for the rest of us! Lastly, I've been working hard on my storytelling skills since the last retreat so I'm really ready to redeem myself and show it off around the camp fire.  danielseunglee.com

Ryan Schude The star you see here, she will be our guide. As we tramp through the desert in search of our new, future selves, she will act as our Pied Piper, escorting us towards the destruction of our past consciousness and directly through the cerebral implosion we deserve. Are you willing to spiritually bleed for her? I'm not talking about bro-tats or synchronizing our cycles or even loaning me quarters for the bus, I'm talking about blaspheming the very maker you were hoping to meet after your demise and submitting to the unknown. Sure we've had tons of laughs, creative revelations, and changed each other's lives forever, so what. Now's the moment to step it up and prove our true commitment. You call it idol worship, I call it Phoot. www.ryanschude.com
